CELEBRATING 6 YEARS OF HIP HOP-POETRY IN HAMILTON WITH $200 IN CASH PRIZES FROM OCTOBER TO DECEMBER!!!

SIX YEARS STRONG: we celebrate our community - our space to share words, experiences, our moments of struggle and joy. We are immensely grateful to our HYP family - to our core team, our artistic director, our features and monthly slammers, our young bright up-and-comers from our school programs and LTABC.

PLEASE READ: We've made some changes to our slam format to continue to challenge our poets and strive together to produce even better work!

OPEN MIC: There will be 5 spots in the open mic, we will do a draw if more than 5 people sign up. There is a 4 min time limit for the open mic.

I. There will a 14 poet cap on the slam signup. Slam signup goes up at 6:15. If the list exceeds 14 poets at 6:45, we will randomly select 14 poets to compete by drawing their names out of a hat.

II. Round 1 will be in random order. Round 2 will takes the top 6 poets from Round 1 and have them go in reverse order. Round 3 will take the top 3 poets in random order. Each round is “clean slate” scoring. The first place winner will be determined from the Round 3 slammers.

III. The time limit for poems in the slam is 3:00. There is a 10 second grace period.

IV. Your overall scores for the season go towards rankings for the year. At the end of the season if you have slammed at least three times and ranked (or won) you will be contacted to be in the semi-finals to compete to be on the HYP Slam Team.

About our Feature:

Eddie Lartey is a wordsmith - wielder of fire, ore, and Hammer. Ry de Riggs strings together poetry that will leave your mouth tasting of sunlight and spice. Dennis "D'Scribe" Scherle hails the sky and can let loose a poetic downpour upon a moment's notice. Tanya Pineda draws down the moon with her bright incantations. AK Asalu's flow is envied by the rapids, the ocean, and the waterfall. From local to national competitions, these poets are a Steel City alloy in colors for which names don't yet exist.
